Description

The Last Supper is a fresco by Leonardo da Vinci painted for his patron Duke Ludovico Sforza. The painting depicts a scene from the Last Supper of the last days of Jesus, as described in the Bible. The painting refers to John 13:21, in which Jesus says that one of his 12 apostles will betray him. The work is one of the most famous and valuable paintings in the world. Unlike many other valuable paintings, however, this one was not privately owned because it could not be moved.
The Last Supper focuses on the reactions of each of the apostles when Jesus tells them that one of them will betray him. The figure of Christ is located in the center of the image. The perspective solution is such that the intersection of all the lines is the head of Jesus. This further enhances the feeling of its importance.
Typical of this type of imagery, Leonardo painted the diners to one side of the table so that none of them had their backs to us.
The image measures 460×880 cm and is located on the wall in the refectory of the Santa Maria delle Grazie monastery in Milan.
