Description
As missionaries, church organizers, philosophers, philologists, writers, educators and translators, the two brothers from Thessalonica brought millions of Slavs to the achievements of Christian culture, expanded their spiritual horizons and determined the fate of Europe and the world for millennia to come.
The imposition of the Christian religion by the two Slavic first teachers has an important historical role. In 1980, Pope John Paul II declared them patrons of Europe.
The church celebrates the memory of the two native Slavic brothers on May 11, and the Bulgarians honor them with their own holiday – the national holiday of Bulgarian writing and culture – on May 24.
